| Jewish American Heritage Month |
---|
Jewish Heritage Month is recognized nationally to honor the "values, contributions, and culture of Jewish Americans" (White House source), and "pay tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who helped form the fabric of American history, culture, and society" (sourced from Library of Congress and others). The Jewish identity goes beyond religious faith: Jewish people share a common culture, nationality, ethnicity and history, as well as religion. Jewish Americans have changed American history and made lasting contributions and impact in science and innovation (Albert Einstein, Milton Friedman, Levi Strauss, Abraham Maslow, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg), popular culture (Jerry Seinfeld, Barbara Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Stewart), world politics (Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright), and art (Marvin Hamlisch, Frank Gehry). Our school has partnered with Jewish on Mercer Island (JOMI) PTA affinity group to bring a collection of children's books that showcase Jewish culture, which will be read during library time in the month of May. Click here to access to a curated list of books on Jewish American Heritage from the School Library Journal. |
| Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month |
---|
In 1977 the U.S. Congress (spearheaded by Representative Frank Horton of New York and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawai'i) chose the first ten days of May to commemorate the history and contributions of Asian American communities here in the U.S. The week's observance became a month, the very month in which the first Japanese immigrants came to the U.S. in 1843. We also commemorate the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 as the majority of workers who laid those railroad tracks were Chinese immigrants. And that's why AANHPI Heritage Month is in May. Per the 2023 White House proclamation of this month: “During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Nation celebrates the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; of brave immigrants who, motivated by the promise of possibilities, picked up their lives and found new homes here; of native peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial; and of community leaders shaping a brighter future for us all. Throughout our history, they have represented the bigger story of who we are as Americans and embodied the truth that our diversity is our strength as a Nation. Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AA and NHPIs) represent us at every level of government, including Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Vice President of South Asian descent; Ambassador Katherine Tai, the first Asian American United States Trade Representative; and Dr. Arati Prabhakar, who is the first South Asian American to lead the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Earlier this year, the WH nominated Julie Su to serve as the Secretary of Labor. From historic Oscar-winning performances in film to achievements across business, culture, sports, and civil rights, AA and NHPIs shape and strengthen the fabric of this Nation. We see their contributions as business owners and caregivers as well as their service in the military and on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.” To learn more about this month, explore the following links: AAPI Heritage Month | PBS AAPI Heritage Month | KCLS Booklist |
If you have religious or cultural holidays you would like included in the ROAR, please send an email to dei@lakeridgepta.org. |

Nancy Schaps Memorial Grant Application Deadline: Sunday, May 28, 2023 The Mercer Island PTA Council is currently accepting applications for the Nancy Schaps Memorial Grant (formerly Scholarship). Until her death from cancer in 1996, Nancy Schaps was an active supporter, through the PTA and other volunteer services, of Mercer Island’s children. The Grant was established in memory of Nancy Schaps by her family and the community and has been given annually since 1996 to more than 50 recipients. Consistent with Nancy’s wishes, the Grant recognizes a Mercer Island child who has suffered the death of a parent or who is currently experiencing the terminal illness of a parent. In 2010, the Schaps Family funded an endowment for this Grant. At that time, they requested that the Grant also include Mercer Island children who have a parent serving on active duty with the military. A Grant award of up to $500 will be given to an elementary, middle, or high school student to be used for an activity or other purpose that will aid a child or youth’s adjustment to this difficult life change. For example, the Grant may be used for lessons, a camp experience, a trip, sports equipment, or a musical instrument. Applications and information are available here. If you have any questions, please contact Shannon Warburg, Nancy Schaps Grant Coordinator, at schapsgrant@miptacouncil.org. |
