All in for Kids Campaign

The Mercer Island School Foundation's (MISF) fall, All in for Kids Campaign, is a critical contributor to the teaching and learning support across the district. With your generosity, the Mercer Island Schools Foundation will provide the funds to make sure ALL students have access to online platforms and the academic, social and emotional support they need.

Every gift matters. Thank you for your investment in our students!

Cultural Holidays Highlight
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

We would like to wish our Jewish community members L'Shana Tovah ("a happy and sweet new year"), as they celebrated the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) on the evening of September 15.  We would also like to wish the community G'mar Chatima Tova ("may you be sealed in the book of life") as they prepare for a meaningful and solemn Yom Kippur holiday, which begins on the evening of September 24.

Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose ancestors came from various communities that have influenced and contributed to American society.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. Now it is a month where we celebrate that Hispanic/Latinx people are both a thriving and an influential force in the US (United States) economy, politics, and society and play a crucial role in America’s prosperity, power, and progress. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Día de la Raza is celebrated on October 12, which falls within the 30-day period.

To further press upon themes of inclusivity and diversity within Latin culture, Latinx has recently been underscored in Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month as a gender-neutral alternative that holds space for all identities and pushes back against a masculine default. We are a vibrant community that recognizes the fact that we are not monolithic but are made up of many different groups with their own unique experiences and identities. This month is a time to celebrate those differences as well as the shared cultural heritage.
